Councillors and Parish Clerk
Parish
Councils were set up in 1894 under the Local Government Act when
revenue came mainly from rates on agricultural land. Their powers
gradually increased and today they are chiefly responsible for
Allotments, Leisure Facilities, Pavements, Street Lighting, Street
Furniture and some grass cutting in conjunction with Oxfordshire County
Council. They are a consultee on planning matters, with
South Oxfordshire District Council having the final say.
Revenue comes from the District Councils who have to supply the amount
of money requested by the Parish. Chalgrove Parish Council
decides on estimates for the annual precept in December.
This has to be finely tuned as of course money is sourced from the
village's community charge.
Chalgrove
has eleven Parish Councillors, who are elected every four
years. Anyone who is eighteen of age or over, is a British
subject and is on the electoral roll or works in the Parish (with
certain provisos) can stand for election.
