Lord Nugent
(1787-1850) unveiled this Monument on 19th June 1843, the 200th
anniversary of the Battle of Chalgrove Field. It was in honour of
John Hampden (1597-1643) who was mortally wounded 550 yards due north
of here, during the conflict. Hampden's principles earned him the
title of the 'Patriot Pater', the 'Father of Democracy, and he becamse
a symbol of inspiration for those seeking reform in his own time, and
in Nugent's. The eminent subscibers to the cost of the
project are listed on the easr face of the Monument and opposite is a
brief description of the encounter. Hampden's Coat of Arms is
displayed on the south side, with his bas-relief on the
north. Moira Calvert, the last surviving Hampden through
the male line, presented this Monument to the Chalgrove Parish Council
in 1988.
